When a subscriber replies to one of your drip emails, it usually signals they want a personal conversation rather than more automated messages. You can configure SendX to automatically remove contacts from a drip campaign when they reply, ensuring your automation doesn't interrupt genuine engagement.

This article shows you how to set up an automation that removes subscribers from a drip when they reply to any email in the sequence.

How Reply Detection Works

SendX monitors replies to your drip emails through a dedicated inbox system. When a subscriber replies to any email in your drip campaign, SendX detects the reply, identifies the contact, and can trigger automations based on that event.

This works automatically for all drip emails. You don't need to configure anything special on individual emails for reply detection to work.

Setting Up the Automation

To automatically remove contacts who reply, you'll create an automation that uses the "replied to drip campaign" trigger.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Go to Automate in the main navigation

  2. Click Automations

  3. Click Create Automation

  4. In the trigger selection, look for drip-specific triggers. You'll see options including:

    • Contact opened a drip campaign

    • Contact clicked in a drip campaign

    • Contact completed a drip campaign

    • Contact replied to a drip campaign

  5. Select Replied to Drip Campaign

  6. Choose the specific drip campaign you want to monitor (e.g., "Onboarding Drip")

  7. For the action, select Remove from Drip Campaign

  8. Select the same drip campaign

  9. Click Start Automation

Once active, any contact who replies to any email in that drip will be automatically removed from the campaign. They won't receive any remaining emails in the sequence.

When to Use This

Removing contacts who reply is particularly useful for:

Sales outreach drips – When a prospect replies, they're showing interest. You want a salesperson to take over, not have another automated email arrive.

Support-style sequences – If someone replies with a question, continuing the drip could feel impersonal or even annoying.

Re-engagement campaigns – A reply indicates the contact is active again. The drip has served its purpose.

Any drip where replies indicate success – If the goal of your drip is to get a response, removing responders prevents over-communication.

Other Drip Engagement Triggers

Beyond replies, you can create automations based on other drip engagement events:

Opened a drip campaign – Triggers when a contact opens any email in the drip. Useful for tracking engagement or triggering follow-up actions.

Clicked in a drip campaign – Triggers when a contact clicks any link in any drip email. This can indicate interest in specific content.

Completed a drip campaign – Triggers when a contact finishes the entire drip sequence (received all Active emails). Use this to move contacts to the next stage of your funnel.

Each of these can be paired with various actions beyond just removing from a drip. For example, when a contact completes a drip, you might add them to a new list, apply a tag, or subscribe them to a different drip campaign.

Example Use Cases

Remove on reply, add tag for follow-up:

  • Trigger: Replied to "Sales Outreach" drip

  • Action 1: Remove from "Sales Outreach" drip

  • Action 2: Add tag "Needs Personal Follow-up"

Move completers to next drip:

  • Trigger: Completed "Onboarding" drip

  • Action: Subscribe to "Product Tips" drip

Tag engaged contacts:

  • Trigger: Clicked in "Newsletter Welcome" drip

  • Action: Add tag "Engaged Subscriber"

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work for replies to any email in the drip?
Yes. The "replied to drip campaign" trigger fires when a contact replies to any email in the specified drip. You cannot configure it for specific steps only.

What happens to emails already scheduled?
When a contact is removed from the drip, they won't receive any remaining emails in the sequence.

Can I use multiple actions with one trigger?
Yes. You can chain multiple actions, like removing from the drip AND adding a tag, within the same automation.

Does this affect contacts who were already removed?
No. The trigger only fires for contacts currently in the drip who then reply.

Can I set this up for multiple drips at once?
You'll need to create a separate automation for each drip campaign you want to monitor. Each automation specifies which drip to watch and which drip to remove from.

What if I want to remove them from ALL drips when they reply to one?
You can add multiple "remove from drip" actions to the same automation, each targeting a different drip campaign.
