Why Are My Emails Clipped?

Email clipping occurs when Gmail hides part of your email content behind a "View entire message" link. This happens when your email exceeds Gmail's 102kb size limit.

Why This Matters

Clipped emails can negatively impact your campaign performance. When Gmail clips your message, it affects deliverability, open rates, click tracking, and overall analytics. Recipients may not see your full content or call-to-action, reducing engagement with your campaigns.

Understanding and preventing email clipping helps ensure your messages display properly and achieve better results.

What Counts Toward the 102kb Limit

The size limit includes:

  • HTML source code

  • Inline CSS styling

  • Hosted images (even external URLs count toward the total)

When these elements combined exceed 102kb, Gmail will clip your email.

Common Causes of Email Clipping

1. Grammarly Extension Interference

The Grammarly browser extension can interfere with SendX's email editor by adding extra CSS and HTML code to your email. This additional code can push your email over the 102kb limit.

Solution: Disable Grammarly when working in the SendX editor.

2. Multiple Test Emails

Multiple texts emails Gmail often combines, or “threads,” emails with the same subject line into a single email in your inbox. If you send several test emails for the same campaign then this will lead to the message becoming larger than 102kb leading Gmail to eventually clip the message.

3. Large or Unoptimized Images

Even though images are hosted externally, they still contribute to your email's total size.

Solution: Compress images before uploading using free services like TinyJPG. This reduces file size without noticeable quality loss.

How to Prevent Email Clipping

  1. Optimize all images before adding them to your campaigns using compression tools like TinyJPG

  2. Disable browser extensions like Grammarly while building emails in SendX

  3. Subject line: Avoid using same subject line over and over.

  4. Keep your email design simple with minimal inline styling

  5. Avoid copying content directly from Word or other document editors, as this adds hidden formatting

Important Notes

  • SendX does not currently have a built-in size checker, so you'll need to monitor your email components manually

  • Email clipping is primarily a Gmail issue, though other email clients may have similar limitations

  • Once an email is clipped, recipients must click "View entire message" to see the full content, which creates friction in the user experience

  • Clipped emails may not track opens and clicks accurately, skewing your campaign analytics

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I know if my email will be clipped before sending?

A: SendX doesn't have a size checker tool yet. Focus on optimizing images and keeping your design clean. If you're using large images or complex HTML, there's a higher chance of clipping.

Q: Will recipients see that my email is clipped?

A: Yes. Gmail displays a "View entire message" link where the content is cut off. This signals to recipients that the email is incomplete, which may reduce engagement.

Q: Does clipping affect my sender reputation?

A: While clipping itself doesn't directly harm sender reputation, it does affect engagement metrics (opens, clicks), which can indirectly impact deliverability over time.

Q: Can I fix an email that's already been sent and clipped?

A: No. Once sent, you cannot modify the email. However, you can optimize and resend the campaign with a different subject line to avoid clipping.

Q: Do all email clients clip messages?

A: No. This is primarily a Gmail limitation, though it's best practice to keep emails under 102kb for optimal performance across all email clients.
